Bartolomé del Presidio

📖 How to build Bartolomé del Presidio

Bartolomé del Presidio is a two-mana Orzhov legendary creature whose only ability lets you sacrifice another creature or artifact to put a +1/+1 counter on it. The game plan is to turn expendable creatures and artifacts into permanent growth, so spare bodies become a steadily larger threat. Because the cost is a sacrifice rather than mana, you can use the ability at instant speed, though each counter costs you a card.

Build around cheap creatures and artifacts you are willing to lose. Reanimate can return creatures you have sacrificed to the battlefield, which supports a loop of sacrifice and recursion. Dark Ritual and Demonic Tutor help you find and deploy your pieces quickly. Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, and Feed the Swarm can clear blockers and keep opponents' threats in check, while Phyrexian Arena and Esper Sentinel add card flow.

The main weakness is that the ability needs other creatures or artifacts to sacrifice, so an empty board gives it nothing to use. Since every counter costs a card, it is a card-disadvantage engine unless your fodder is replaceable. Toxic Deluge can wipe your own sacrifice fodder, so be selective about sweepers. The provided rules text also does not list power or toughness, so check the card's stats before committing to it.
