Ulamog, the Defiler

📖 How to build Ulamog, the Defiler

Ulamog, the Defiler is a colorless ten-mana Eldrazi built for late-game power. When you cast it, the targeted opponent exiles the top half of their library, and Ulamog enters with +1/+1 counters equal to the highest mana value among those exiled cards. Its annihilator matches that counter total, so the plan is to bury the opponent's library and then attack.

Build around ways to make the ten-mana cost more reachable, along with effects that exile cards or favor high mana value cards in the opponent's library. Since the detected theme is +1/+1 counters, counter-focused cards fit well. Its colorless identity means it can slot into any color combination.

Ten mana is slow, and the counter total depends on what gets exiled, so a library of low-cost cards leaves Ulamog small. Its cast trigger only happens when you cast it, not when it enters another way. Ward, sacrificing two permanents, makes removal costly for opponents, but you pay that price too. Annihilator only triggers on attacks, so Ulamog needs a way to connect.
