📖 How to build Thrakkus the Butcher

Thrakkus the Butcher is a Gruul Dragon with trample. Whenever it attacks, the power of each Dragon you control is doubled until end of turn. The game plan is to build a board of Dragons, attack with Thrakkus, and use the doubled power to push damage through blockers.

Build around it with enough Dragons that the attack trigger regularly has targets, and ramp into its five-mana cost early with Llanowar Elves, Birds of Paradise, Rampant Growth, Cultivate, Farseek, or Kodama's Reach. Blasphemous Act, Beast Within, and Chaos Warp can handle opposing blockers or threats, and Heroic Intervention can protect your key creatures.

Watch the weaknesses. The doubling only affects Dragons, so with few Dragons Thrakkus is just a trampling attacker. Its ability only triggers when it attacks, so it offers nothing on defense. As a single legendary creature, it is vulnerable to removal, and you should avoid overcommitting non-Dragon threats expecting Thrakkus to boost them.
