Shigeki, Jukai Visionary

📖 How to build Shigeki, Jukai Visionary

Shigeki is a green ramp engine. For {1}{G} and a tap, you return it to your hand, reveal the top four cards of your library, and may put one land from among them onto the battlefield tapped. The rest go to your graveyard. Because Shigeki returns to hand, you can recast it and repeat the ability, steadily building mana while filling your graveyard. Its channel ability then discards it from hand to return several nonlegendary cards from your graveyard to your hand.

Build around cheap mana sources that help you reach your big plays, such as Cultivate, Farseek, Rampant Growth, Kodama's Reach, Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, and Elvish Mystic. Add land-finding support like Nature's Lore and Three Visits. Fill the deck with nonlegendary payoffs you want to recur, since channel can only return nonlegendary cards.

Shigeki is slow to generate value. Each activation costs {1}{G} plus a recast, it puts at most one land onto the battlefield, and nonland cards you reveal go to your graveyard rather than your hand. Channel costs {X}{X}{G}{G}, works only from your hand, and cannot return legendary cards, so it is expensive and depends on Shigeki being in hand at the right time.
