Kaervek the Merciless

📖 How to build Kaervek the Merciless

Kaervek the Merciless is a seven-mana legendary Human Shaman whose single ability punishes opponents for playing spells. Whenever an opponent casts a spell, Kaervek deals damage equal to that spell's mana value to any target. The game plan is to hold it on the battlefield and make every opposing spell cost the table, with the damage aimed wherever you choose.

Build around ways to put Kaervek into play and to keep it there. Dark Ritual and Faithless Looting help you reach the mana and cards you need, while Reanimate and Demonic Tutor can get it onto the battlefield or into your hand. Removal such as Blasphemous Act, Toxic Deluge, Feed the Swarm, Vandalblast, and Deadly Rollick clears blockers and threats, and Deflecting Swat and Chaos Warp can help you protect your board. Phyrexian Arena adds card advantage to a deck that wants opponents to keep casting spells.

Kaervek is expensive and is itself a creature, so it can be removed before it does anything. Its trigger only happens when an opponent casts a spell, so it does nothing on turns when opponents cast nothing, and it does not respond to your own spells. Because the damage equals mana value, opponents who rely on cheap spells will take little damage from each one. Plan for early pressure and for opponents who stop casting spells once Kaervek is on the battlefield.
